Is there more documentation about the data besides the online codebooks?
Yes! The PSID has important documentation about all data, available through the Data and Documentation menu. For the main PSID, get this documentation from the menu by clicking "Packaged Main Data/Doc " and selecting from the Documentation column. For supplemental files, click on " Packaged Supplemental Data/Doc", select the desired file, and either download the entire ZIP package or click on various links labeled "Intro", etc. under each file description. Choose "CDS Doc" for everything about CDS.

Where are the "Income Plus", "Work Hours and Wage Rates", "Family Wealth", "Family Weights", and "Demographic (derived) Variables" data for waves prior to 1994?
Equivalents to these variables are located on the main family files for all waves prior to 1994.

Why are there no variables for 1994, 1995, 1996, and 2001 total family income in the index (PSID: Family-Level Variables ->01>INCOME -> 02>Family Money)?
Variables from supplemental files have not yet been incorporated into the index, and the total family income variables for 1994-1996 and 2001 are present only on the supplemental files. We have plans to add such variables to the index in the future. These variables are available by going to the "Variable Selection By File" page or the "Variable Selection By Search" in the "Variable Selection" menu above. A carefully thought out search will often produce a result set of variables across years.

Codebook information for some variables does not show index information. Why?
Some variables are not yet in the index, i.e., variables from supplemental files. We plan to add these variables to the index in the future.

On the "Variable Selection By File" page, why do some supplemental files (1994-2003 waves) have less observations than the main family files?
Some supplemental files were created only for core sample cases. For example, the 1994 and 1995 Income Plus files omit data records for the approximately 2,000 Latino families that were included in the PSID from 1990-1995.

I made a file containing supplemental variables. Why are some data missing?
See FAQ #5.

Why won't the Data Center let me create a file merging CDS Time Diary data files with other data?
Only one file is allowed in your cart if CDS Time Diary is selected. To add CDS Time Diary variables to your cart, you must select variables from just one file, and there cannot be any variables from other files in your cart. Time diary data are not at an individual or family level (like other data in the data center), so the data center does not "know" how to merge it.

Where can I learn about all of the features in the Data Center?
On most pages in the Data Center, see the link to contextual help on the top right of the page. Also, see "Tutorials/PSID in the Classroom", located inside the "PSID Guide" menu; you can choose from a growing list of practical tutorials on creating and using PSID/CDS data from the data center, including three tutorials on intergenerational data.

Why are data available as "Packaged" if they are also in the Data Center?
The packaged files contain important documentation that you should download and read. For completeness, these packaged ZIP files also contain full ASCII data files with data definition statements, univariate frequencies, means, etc.

How can I submit a suggestion, question, etc.?
Login to the Data Center; the "Feedback" link appears on the bottom right of every page. This link is not available if you are not logged in.

-
How long are my data available for download after they are created?
Data files are deleted from our servers when they are 7 days old. After that, you can re-create your data file by logging into the Data Center and selecting "Variable Selection By Cart".

What identification variables should I download?
The Data Center automatically includes all appropriate identification variables for your file.
