In each main interview since 2005, the PSID asked respondents who were either age 65 or older
or receiving Medicare to provide their Medicare number and consent to link to their Medicare
records. Approximately 2,200 PSID respondents plus decedents who had never refused permission
have been matched to as many as 19 years of claims, 1991-2010.

Requirements include:
- Hold a faculty level appointment at a research institution
- Enter into contractual agreements with the University of Michigan and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
- Have a standalone (non-networked) computer or use of an approved secure data enclave
- Receive IRB approval from the researcher’s institution
- Agree to the terms of the PSID Audit Protocol
